Everyone is exposed to the risks of personal injury in the course of his or her daily activities. Such accident could result in serious disablement thereby affecting the ability of the individual to continue with normal activities such as working, playing games or leading just a normal life. In the worst case, an accident could be fatal and the families could be left without financial support.

A personal accident insurance policy to designed to provide for compensation to the Insured Person for death or disablement caused solely by an accident and not by sickness, disease or gradual physical or mental wear and tear.

As in the case of life insurance, there is generally no limit to the amount of insurance cover that may be effected by the Insured Person for personal accident insurance. However, Insurer will be put to enquiry if an individual took up insurance cover excessively.

Insurance premiums will depend on the sums insured and the results considered i.e. respect of death, permanent loss or disablement (where the benefits are according to a scale), total or partial disablement subject to weekly benefits and lastly for medical, surgical, hospital and other related expenses.

 
Exclusions under a personal accident insurance policy are :
 

      Injury caused by the Insured Person engaging in :

• Air Travel except as a passenger in a fully licensed passenger carrying aircraft.
• Any crew, trade, technical or sporting activity in connection with an aircraft.
• Motorcycling (as driver or passenger).
 

      Injury caused by the Insured Person engaging in or practising for :

  • Parachuting.
• Hang gliding.
• Any kind of race (other than on foot) or trial of speed or reliability.
• Mountaineering.
 

      Injury caused by :

• War, invasion, act of foreign enemy, hostilities (whether war be declared or not), civil War, rebellion, insurrection, military or usurped power terrorism, riot or strike.
• Suicide or intentional self-injury.
• Pregnancy, childbirth or pre-existing physical or mental defect or infirmity.
• The Insured Person being affected by a drug unless the drug is taken in accordance with an authorised medical prescription (but not for the treatment of drug addiction).
 
 

In exceptional cases and subject to additional premium loading, cover can be extended to include injury from certain excluded activities. Each case is considered on its own merits.

Personal accident insurance can be taken up for groups of persons and Insurers are more amenable to consider some discount in the rates for large number of persons covered.
